 MORE THAN 1,200 EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGISTS
TO ATTEND 'EVOLUTION 2000' CONFERENCE JUNE 23-27

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- More than 1,200 evolutionary biologists will
come to Indiana University's Bloomington campus June 23-27 for "Evolution
2000," the annual joint meeting of the Society for the Study of Evolution,
the American Society of Naturalists, the Society of Systematic Biologists,
and the Association of Tropical Biologists.
Each society will sponsor talks, symposia and poster sessions on
topics in evolutionary biology and ecology, with a total of 892
presentations. The schedule of events, a brief history of research in
biology at IU, and on-site registration information can be found on the
 conference Web site at http://www.evolution2000.indiana.edu/
A symposium on teaching evolution will be presented Friday (June
23), 1-5 p.m. This will include laboratory demonstration sessions to
illustrate topics covered in college courses. Examples of topics are the
evolution of antibiotic resistance in the common gut bacterium E. coli, and
the use of fossil and modern skulls of apes and humans to illustrate the
importance of comparative morphology (skeletal and dental features) in
 determining evolutionary relationships.
Members of the local host committee are IU biology professors
Michael J. Wade (chair), Lynda Delph, Curt Lively, Keith Clay and Butch
Brodie. Wade can be reached at 812-856-4680 or mjwade@bio.indiana.edu
