NOBEL PEACE LAUREATE TO SPEAK AT CENTER FOR INQUIIRY-L.A.

"Remember Your Humanity: The Ethical Duty of Scientists"
 Sir Joseph Rotblat

 July 2, 1999 @ 7:30pm

Sir Joseph Rotblat, 1995 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, will speak at the Center
for Inquiry--Los Angeles, at 5519 Grosvenor Boulevard, near Marina Del Rey,
on Friday, July 2. Rotblat's presentation---titled "Remember Your Humanity:
The Ethical Duty of Scientists"---will challenge public and scientists to
apply higher standards of moral responsibility in the development of new
technology. The public meeting, Rotblat's only LA engagement in a rare United
States visit, will start at 7.30 p.m.

Rotblatt was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for half a century of campaigning
against nuclear weapons and for his work in leading "Pugwash"---an
organization dedicated to promoting ethical responsibility in scientific
research. In recent years Pugwash has expanded its concerns beyond nuclear
technology to fields such as bio-genetic engineering. A friend of Albert
Einstein and Bertrand Russell, Rotblat worked on the Mahattan Project to
create the world's first "Atom Bomb", before becoming the first scientist to
withdraw from the construction of nuclear weapons on ethical grounds.

Rotblat, a Professor Emeritus at the University of London, has written over
400 publications---including 24 books---on nuclear and medical physics,
control of nuclear weapons, the Pugwash movement, and the social
responsibility of scientists. Rotblat was knighted in 1998.

The Center for Inquiry--Los Angeles, located at 5519 Grosvenor Blvd. (near
the L.A. Airport), is the new West Coast center for critical thinking and
controversial discussion. It is the West Coast Bureau and programming center
for Skeptical Inquiry, The Magazine for Science and Reason. Admission
tickets are only $10 ($5 for paid-up Friends of the Center for Inquiry) in
advance and $15 at the door. Parking is free. Space is limited to just 120
