Dear CSICOP
The Association for Skeptical Enquiry (ASKE) has arranged an evening
session on cult archaeology for this Friday as part of the British
Association for the Advancement of Science's 'SET99' festival. If you
could arrange for the details of this event (see below) to be
distributed via your mailing list, this would of great assistance to us.
As ever, you help will be much appreciated.
Regards
Wayne Spencer

----------
The Association for Skeptical Enquiry (ASKE) and the British Association
for the Advancement of Science present two talks on: 'Cult Archaeology -
Sensational but Questionable Claims about the Past'.
Date Friday 19 March.
Time: 7.00 - 8.30 p.m.
Venue: Department of Psychology, University of Sheffield, Western Bank,
Sheffield.
Cost: Free.
Speakers will look at sensational claims, recently popularized in
best-selling books and on television, about ancient civilizations in
various parts of the world. These claims are said to be based on
archaeological findings, but the speakers ask: "Is there any real
evidence?"
The speakers will be as follows:
++ Jennie Hawcroft (University of Sheffield). She will introduce the
session by comparing and contrasting cult archaeology and traditional
archaeology. She will also discuss the aquatic ape hypothesis and the
myth of the 'Celts'.
++ Doug Weller <http://www.ramtops.demon.co.uk>. He will evaluate a
number of popular cult archaeological claims. Amongst other things, his
talk will include discussions of the 'lost continents' of Atlantis,
Lemuria and Mu; 'helicopter' hieroglyphs and other claims concerning
ancient Egypt; the astronomic knowledge of the Dogon tribe; and Noah's
Ark.
Wheelchair access is available. Booking is not required; just turn up on
the night. For further details, contact Wayne Spencer
