 Explores:
The Gender Politics of Science

University of Colorado
Boulder, Colorado
June 6-7, 1997

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The First Annual Meeting of the Rational Feminist Alliance of CSICOP

Gender and racial politics frequently resort to claims that go unchallenged
for political reasons. This amounts to intellectual intimidation, most
notably -- and of greatest concern -- in academic institutions which condone
any trivial social or ethnic influence in order to avoid offense. In these
circumstances, considerations of intellectual rigor or academic relevance
inevitably fall by the wayside. Feminist rhetoric has been misused most
explicitly in medicine and psychology while racial/nationalistic rhetoric has
been misused in anthropology. The consequence of this kind of academic
misbehavior can be seen permeating popular culture. Laws are being written
institutionalizing these kinds of anti-rational impulses. The burgeoning
influence of creationism, Afro-centrism, "alternative" medicine and repressed
memory and their legitimation in vital societal institutions is far too
common. This conference will elucidate the misuse of evidence in Anthropology
and Psychology. We will not flinch at controversy. We hope that the outcome
will give participants a weapon or two in defense of reason.
