Some years ago my wife had my daughter enrolled in Immanuel Chrsitian School in
Ridgecrest, California. Every year the "Science" department sponsored a fair.
When my daughter was in 6th grade she entered a project attempting to
demonstrate that the acceleration due to gravity is constant, independent of
the mass of an object. To try ro shorten this note, I believe the methodogy
was fine the experiment was well documented and the results were well
summarized. The project was given a D. It appears that balls rolling down an
inclined plane had nothing to do with the acceleration due to gravity. Another
student submitted a research project. Her only source cited was the Bible.
Using this irrefutable source she was able to prove the correctness
creationism. [She of course won first prize.] Seeing the creation science
comic vividly brought this memory back to me. The best humour reflects life?
Negative response:
The portrayl of "Billy" the "Creation Science Fair" first prize winner is
tasteless and bigoted. It reveals a mindset lurking behind concerned with
hurling insults, hurting and punishing people with different ideas. While
Creation Science is obviously problematical its opponents are human beings who
should be treated with consideration at all times. It is their ideas and
wrong-headedness that should be challenged by the cool presentation of facts.
Given the contradictory character of human nature ridiculing wrong scientists
may actually cause some devotees to embrace it more passionately in the way
that a mother with a deformed child clings lovingly to an offspring feared
because of mere appearances.
