Noted UFO Expert Confirms New 'MJ-12' Documents Are Bogus

MJ-12 Phillip J. Klass, noted UFO skeptic, has confirmed evidence that recently circulated "Majestic Twelve" (MJ-12) documents are bogus. Klass details his findings in an article appearing in the May/June 2000 issue of Skeptical Inquirer magazine.

MJ-12 is an alleged top-secret group created by President Truman in 1947 to keep the lid on crashed UFOs and other extraterrestrial encounters. In 1987, the original batch of MJ-12 documents achieved international fame among many UFOlogists. But in 1990, Klass proved that the signature of President Harry Truman on one of the original documents-an alleged 1947 memo from Truman to Secretary of Defense James Forrestal-was forged: a photocopy from another document. Other MJ-12 documents refer to the forged 1947 memo, implicating them as well.

In the 1990s, new MJ-12 documents surfaced, uncovered by Tim Cooper. Fellow British UFOlogist Timothy Good noticed suspicious similarities between certain mechanical flaws of the typewriter used by Cooper in letters to him, and the typewriter used in an alleged 1952 MJ-12 "Annual Report" brought to light by Cooper.

Philip Klass requested copies of both the letters and the MJ-12 documents from Good. Consulting a type expert, Klass confirmed that a defective raised "G", "N", and "8" were consistent between the documents. Together with factual inaccuracies, the similarities form strong evidence confirming Good's original suspicions. The odds of two different typewriters bearing the exact same defects are slim, casting serious doubt on the authenticity of the recent MJ-12 papers.
